Design Studio 4 Project 2 Community Center

Learning Outcomes
1. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability in design
2. Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural, context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences
3. Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context
4. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology

With an idea of "puzzling form and functions", the community center for Orang Asli is designed with three clustered blocks with different function. Although we had interviewed the villagers and told that they wanted a supermarket or bazaar for their convenient of buying things, but in my opinion, education of art and crafts is more essential for them to develop and promote the unique culture.

The main block which facing the Museum is spaces for children to learn and play (edutainment) about arts and crafts. Linking to another block, which function as an interactive center for Orang Asli and visitors, there are a gathering place for parents to gather around and watch over their children. "The Circle" is the most inviting space surrounded by blocks, create a sense of security for children to play outdoor. The happening space of the Circle also attract and promote the community center to visitors to come in and join their activities and cultures.

The boards show the site analysis, building analysis, concept developments and drawings of the community center. Physical models were also made to introduce and explain the design in 3D form by using balsa wood.
